Beacon of Hope: Steven “Bee” Okello’s Journey from Street Life to School and Sport

In the bustling streets of Gulu City, it’s easy to overlook the small boy weaving through traffic, balancing survival on his shoulders at an age when he should be playing freely. That boy was Steven Okello—known by his peers as “Bee.” For years, the street was his home, and survival was his only goal.

Today, Bee’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and hope. Through Nyero Foundation’s scholarship program, he traded the noise of the streets for the sound of classrooms and the joy of football fields.

“I used to think my future ended on the streets,” Bee says. “Now I dream of finishing school and helping other children like me.”

The scholarship did more than pay his school fees—it provided scholastic materials, mentorship, and a support network that believed in him. On the football pitch, Bee discovered discipline and teamwork, while in class, he found the confidence to aim higher.

His family, though struggling, has rallied behind him, recognizing the value of education. His teachers report improved focus, better grades, and a positive attitude. Bee now dreams of becoming a role model for other street children, proving that with opportunity, anything is possible.

This story is just one among many, but it symbolizes what Nyero Foundation strives for: turning potential into promise
